Event Description:
9:30 a.m.: Coffee and registration 10:00 a.m.: Doug Tallamy – Bringing Nature Home Because our gardens and managed landscapes are part of the terrestrial ecosystems that sustain we humans and the life around us, we must keep them in working order. To do that we can no longer view plants only as ornaments but must consider all of their ecological roles when we select them for our gardens. Gardening in this crowded world carries both moral and ecological responsibilities that we can no longer ignore. Doug Tallamy, Professor and Chair of the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology, and director of the Center for Managed Ecosystems at the University of Delaware, has authored 73 research articles; he has also taught Insect Taxonomy, Behavioral Ecology, and other courses for 30 years. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. His book Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens was published by Timber Press in 2007 and was awarded the 2008 silver medal by the Garden Writer’s Association. 12:00 p.m.: Lunch. Enjoy a stroll around the grounds during the break. 12:45 p.m.: Warren Leach - Gardening Toward Creating Sustainable Landscapes A sustainable landscape is both visually pleasing and environmentally friendly. A sustainable planting design balances the local climatic and geological conditions with the cultural needs of plants and a maintenance program that uses minimal resources (fertilizers, pesticides, energy, water, and time). Landscape designer and horticulturist Warren Leach will explore landscape design themes, emphasizing plants and planting combinations that make up an environmentally friendly garden. He will highlight landscapes, using before and after photos that embrace this paradigm. Warren Leach is co-owner of Tranquil Lake Nursery in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, a prominent grower of Daylilies, Irises, and distinctive perennials and woody plants. He is a passionate plant collector, nurseryman, horticulturist, and award-winning landscape designer. Over the last twenty-five years, Warren has created beautiful landscapes throughout New England as well as creating captivating and educational display gardens at Tranquil Lake Nursery. He has twice received the National Landscape Association Regional Certificate of Merit for Residential Landscape Design. $45 Blithewold, RINLA, and Master Gardener member, $55 Non-member
