For gardeners the ultimate pleasure is to be able to cut flowers from their own garden to beautify their home and give it a fresh look and feel. At Blithewold, which has tended a cutting garden for over 100 years, flowers from the garden have been brought into the Mansion for everyday pleasure as well as for special events, or given away to friends and family. Others who keep a cutting garden love to have home-grown blossoms, foliage, and seed heads handy for fresh or dried floral arrangements and crafts, and even for cooking. Guests will meet at Blithewold’s Greenhouse, then accompany Gardens Manager Gail Read into the Cutting Garden, where she will share what she likes to grow for cut flowers. The June session of the two-part series highlights cutting-garden annuals and planting plans; a walk around the property will highlight a variety of flowers worthy to be cut and brought into the home. The cutting bed comes into its own in July through September. September is Gail’s favorite time in the cutting garden—the flowers are so exuberant! Diane Smith is Director of the East Bay Coalition for the Homeless a housing program of East Bay Community Action. She has over 20 years of non-profit experience in the field of housing, development and social services.

Ms. Smith began her career in Boston having graduated from Suffolk University with a Bachelors degree in Political Science. She then worked as a Legislative Research Analyst for the Massachusetts House of Representative.

With a young family, she turned to selling real estate where she was a successful realtor in the Boston area for 8 years until she moved to Rhode Island.

Diane had volunteered for over five years as Disaster Relief Coordinator for the American Red Cross in the Boston area. Upon moving to Rhode Island, she was hired as Director for the Northern Rhode Island Chapter and remained in that position until the Chapter’s merged in the early 90’s, when she started working in her current position. She left for a short time, when asked by the newly created State of Rhode Island’s Housing Resource Commission to start-up and coordinate the newly formed Office of Homelessness and Emergency Assistance and returned to her current position two years later.

Her community and volunteer experience include: President of the Providence Chapter of the Business and Professional Women, and serving on the Town of Smithfield Affordable Housing Commission Board and subsequently Town of Smithfield Economic Development Commission.

Diane holds a graduate certificate in Community Development from the University of Rhode Island.

The Bristol Fourth of July Committee's 64th Annual Orange Crate Derby will be held on Sunday, June 9, 2013 (rain date: June 16, 2013) on Bayview Avenue. The Derby check-in start at 1:30 pm and the races will begin at 3:00 pm.

There will be one practice run allowed per entry. The race will be double elimination. Drivers should be between the ages of 7 and 14, be a resident of Bristol, RI, and all drivers are required to wear a helmet with chin strap, elbow pads, gloves. Optional safety gear includes goggles, mouth guard, safety belt.

Entry Details:

All cars will be required to pass a safety inspection to determine compliance with the above requirements, 90 minutes prior to the start of the race:

No wheel changes or oiling of bearings. No modification of car after inspection.
All servicing will be done in a designated area supervised by Committee members.
During the race, drivers must remain in control of their vehicles at all times and must remain in their assigned lanes.
The derby will be raced under the rule of Double Elimination.
Cars which do not meet all of the above requirements will be disqualified.
The decision of the judges are final.

free financial learning opportunities

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – General Treasurer Gina M. Raimondo today, as part of Financial Literacy Month, announced the start of a financial empowerment library tour. Each stop of the tour is designed to highlight a different component of personal financial management, including understanding your credit score, managing your debt and developing a budget.

“My office is always looking for innovative ways to help Rhode Islanders become financially empowered,” Raimondo said. “This program brings free financial education directly to our neighborhoods through local libraries. By providing a place for people to safely learn about their finances, I believe we can move our state forward one person at a time. ”

Volunteers and staff from the Capital Good Fund, a nonprofit that provides personal financial coaching and innovative microloans, will present at these events. The organization is Treasury’s partner for the Rhode Island Financial Coaching Corps, a program of Treasury’s Empower RI initiative. The goal of the Corps is to match volunteers with financial skills and know-how with Rhode Islanders looking to learn how to make their money work for them. Their mission is to empower Rhode Islanders to take charge of their finances.

“Corps members are trained volunteers – active and retired financial planners, accountants and bankers – who donate their time by working with Rhode Islanders to improve their financial situation,” said Andy Posner, Executive Director of the Capital Good Fund. “We are pleased to bring our innovative financial education model to local libraries.”

Thursday, July 4
Hope and Chestnut Streets
10:30 a.m.

The Fourth of July Parade begins at 10:30 a.m. and will step-off at the corner of Chestnut Street and Hope Street (Rt. 114) and ends on High Street, between State Street and Bradford Street.

Hope Street (Rt. 114) will be closed off beginning at 8:00 a.m., including Poppasquash Road.

Beginning at 7:00 a.m., Chestnut Street, Naomi Street and Sherry Avenue will be close to traffic. A parking ban along the parade route goes into effect the night before the parade.
